Sena Kobayakawa (小早川 瀬那 Kobayakawa Sena?) is the main protagonist in the manga and anime series Eyeshield 21. He is a dynamic character who, at the start of the series, willingly becomes a gopher for other people to avoid being bullied more. By becoming the running back and the ace of the Deimon Devil Bats, Sena matures and becomes braver, and becomes willing to place himself in danger of physical harm in order to achieve his goals. He is a first-year Japanese high school student. A major element of the series' plot is the revelation of the history of the title "Eyeshield 21", which Sena is forced to use as a secret identity for much of the series. He is the main rival of Seijuro Shin of Ojou White Knights.

Conception and development

Riichiro Inagaki, writer of the series, is a fan of the St. Louis Rams and Marshall Faulk. Inagaki said that seeing Faulk run served as an inspiration for the creation of Sena.[1] Additionally, Sena's name is a homage to the late F1 driver Ayrton Senna.[2]

Character outline

Background

Due to his diminutive stature and weak outward appearance, Sena was bullied by his peers in primary school, Riku Kaitani taught Sena how to use an explosive run to get rid of them. However, Sena used this run to become a gopher for others instead of getting rid of bullies. Unknowingly, this allowed Sena to build up his running and dodging ability.

Soon after entering senior high school, Sena was forced into playing American football by Yoichi Hiruma. Hiruma had seen Sena running away from the Ha-ha brothers, who wanted to beat him up, and recognized Sena's running ability. To conceal his identity, Sena wears a green colored eyeshield to cover the upper part of his face during practices and matches. In the manga, the color was later changed to blue when Hayato Akaba of the Bando Spiders gave Sena his eyeshield, relinquishing the name Eyeshield 21. Hiruma picked the alias "Eyeshield 21" after an ace Japan player of the same name in the United States of America, so that Sena could have a secret identity and thus not be recruited by other athletic clubs.

Although a bit of a coward, he is a kind and chivalrous guy. He once tried used his speed to protect Mamori against Agon, and during his Death March, he twice tried to protect Suzuna from falling. When Agon made fun of Hiruma and Kurita's dream of going to the Christmas Bowl, he became infuriated, and for the first time in his matches, he tried to attack someone head on with destructive intent. He is also the first one who tried to knock some sense into Monta when he devastated about the fact facing the son of his idol, Taka Honjo of the Teikoku Gakuen.

Techniques and strategies

Plot overview

Sena was always teased and bullied through elementary school because he relied on his childhood friend Mammori Anezaki to protect him. In fourth grade, he met Riku Kaitani who decided to teach Sena his running techniques, which Sena absorbed quickly. At first however, Sena used his new running ability to run errands for others, much to Riku's disgust and anger. After a while, Riku moved away, and Sena still used his speed to help carry bags and buy food for others. Ironically, this running helped Sena develop his dodging and running skills.

Sena made it into Deimon High School where he continued to be a gopher for others. On the first day, he enrages the Haha brothers who decide to teach Sena a lesson in the American football room. They become distracted and start messing around with the equipment instead, just as Kurita breaks in, asking if any of them would like to join the football team. After trying to tackle Kurita, the three Haha brothers are tossed out by Kurita, who believes he is simply showing them a linebacker move. The thugs later try to take revenge on Kurita and harrass Sena for his number, who flees from the three Haha Brothers. Meanwhile Hiruma, the devilish quarterback of the Deimon America football team sees Sena'a potential and forces Sena to join the team.

Sena decides to stay on the Deimon American football team because he finds it fun. Soon, Hiruma manages to recruit a full team for the tournament. The team hope to be in the top three teams of Tokyo to advance to the Kanto tournament and finally the Christmas Bowl. The Christmas bowl is the match for the best high school American football team in Japan. Through many hard games Sena and his team finally manage to advance to Christmas Bowl and win. Throughout the games Sena improves his running skills and learns many techniques to become the best running back he can be. He becomes the MVP of the Kantou tournament.

After winning the Christmas Bowl, Sena, Monta, Yamato and Taka, the best receivers and running backs of Japan are called to build a national team. The four split up to find teammates that can create the best Japan Team possible for the International Youth American Football tournament in New York. Japan beats Russia and Germany to finally advance to the finals. There, they meet up with America, the favorites of the tournament. Japan manages to tie America by the end of the game, something no one thought was possible.

Two years later, it is shown that Sena had been playing for Notre Dame in America during the final half of his last year in Deimon. He returns to Japan to attend Enma college, and faces off against some of his former teammates who attend different colleges as they all compete to go the Rice Bowl, the match between the best college American football teams.
